How to Choose a Crypto Wallet: Beginner's Guide
Choosing a crypto wallet is one of the first important decisions you'll make when getting started with cryptocurrency.
A crypto wallet helps you interact with blockchain networks, receive and send cryptocurrency, and in some cases connect to decentralised applications (dApps).
But not all wallets work the same way.
Hot Wallet vs Cold Wallet
Crypto wallets are commonly divided into two broad categories.
Hot wallets are connected to the internet. They can be convenient for regular transactions, trading and interacting with DeFi applications.
Cold wallets keep private keys offline and are commonly used by people who want to reduce online exposure when storing cryptocurrency for longer periods.
Each approach has advantages and disadvantages.
Custodial vs Self-Custody Wallets
Another important distinction is who controls the private keys.
With a custodial wallet, a third party such as a cryptocurrency exchange generally controls the keys on your behalf.
With a self-custody wallet, you control the private keys yourself.
Self-custody provides greater control but also places greater responsibility on you. Losing access to your recovery information could result in permanent loss of access to your cryptocurrency.
Check Blockchain Compatibility
Not every wallet supports every cryptocurrency or blockchain.
Before transferring funds, check that the wallet supports the blockchain network and asset you're planning to use.
Sending cryptocurrency using an incompatible network or incorrect address can potentially result in lost funds.
Protect Your Recovery Phrase
Your wallet's recovery or seed phrase is extremely sensitive.
Never:
Share it with someone offering support
Enter it into an unknown website
Send it through email or social media
Give it to someone claiming to represent a crypto project
Store it somewhere others can easily access
Anyone who obtains your recovery phrase may be able to control your wallet.
What Should Beginners Look For?
Before choosing a crypto wallet, consider:
Security
Supported cryptocurrencies and networks
Ease of use
Reputation and development history
Backup and recovery options
Compatibility with applications you intend to use
Don't choose a wallet simply because someone promoted it on social media.
Which Type of Wallet Do You Use?
Do you prefer a hot wallet, hardware wallet, exchange wallet or a combination of different wallets?
If you're new to cryptocurrency and confused about choosing a wallet, post your questions below and tell the community what you plan to use the wallet for.
