Hot Wallet vs Cold Wallet: Which Do You Use?
One of the decisions crypto users eventually face is where to keep their cryptocurrency.
Two terms beginners frequently encounter are hot wallet and cold wallet.
But which one do people actually use?
Hot Wallets
A hot wallet is connected to the internet and can be convenient for people who regularly send crypto, interact with decentralised applications or use DeFi platforms.
Advantages can include:
Convenient access
Easy transactions
Compatibility with many crypto applications
Usually quick to set up
The trade-off is greater exposure to online security threats such as phishing, malicious websites and compromised devices.
Cold Wallets
Cold wallets are designed to keep private keys offline.
Hardware wallets are a common example and are often considered by people who intend to hold cryptocurrency without regularly moving it.
Potential advantages include:
Private keys can remain offline
Reduced exposure to some online attacks
Suitable for longer-term storage
However, users still need to securely protect their recovery information and understand how to operate the wallet correctly.
Do You Need Both?
Some crypto users don't choose one or the other.
They might keep a smaller amount in a hot wallet for regular transactions while keeping longer-term holdings in cold storage.
Others prefer exchanges or different combinations depending on how they use cryptocurrency.
Which Do You Prefer?
Do you use a hot wallet, cold wallet, both, or something else?
What made you choose your current setup?
If you've used both, what advantages and disadvantages have you experienced?
Beginners are welcome to ask questions about the differences and learn from other members' experiences.
Security reminder: Never share your seed phrase, recovery phrase or private keys in this forum or with anyone who contacts you privately.
