Why Are Crypto Network Fees So High Sometimes?

A common surprise for people new to cryptocurrency is discovering that sending or using crypto can sometimes involve a network fee.

Even more confusing, the fee may be very small at one time and considerably higher at another.

So, why do crypto network fees change?

What Is a Crypto Network Fee?

A network fee is generally a charge associated with processing a transaction on a blockchain.

Depending on the network, you might encounter fees when:

  • Sending cryptocurrency

  • Swapping tokens

  • Using a decentralised exchange

  • Interacting with a smart contract

  • Using DeFi applications

  • Moving assets between certain networks

You may also hear terms such as gas fee, particularly when discussing Ethereum and compatible blockchain networks.

Why Can Fees Increase?

The reason varies between blockchains, but network demand can be an important factor.

When many people are trying to use a blockchain at the same time, competition for transaction processing can affect fees on some networks.

Different blockchains also use different approaches to transaction processing and fees, which is why transferring assets on one network can cost substantially more or less than using another.

Exchange Fees and Network Fees Aren't Always the Same

This can be confusing for beginners.

An exchange may charge its own withdrawal or service fee, while the blockchain itself may have a network transaction fee.

Before making a transaction, check exactly what you're being charged for rather than assuming every charge is a blockchain fee.

Always Check the Network

When withdrawing or transferring cryptocurrency, don't simply choose a network because it displays the lowest fee.

The sending platform, receiving wallet and cryptocurrency need to support the network you're using.

Choosing an incompatible network can potentially result in lost funds.

What's Your Experience With Crypto Fees?

Have you ever been surprised by the cost of sending, swapping or withdrawing cryptocurrency?

Which blockchain networks have you found inexpensive or expensive to use?

Do network fees influence which blockchain or cryptocurrency you use?

Share your experiences below, and beginners are welcome to ask questions about fees they don't understand.
