Does Web3 Still Have a Future?
A few years ago, Web3 became one of the biggest terms in the cryptocurrency and technology industries.
Projects promised a more decentralised internet built around blockchain technology, digital ownership, decentralised applications and user-controlled assets.
Since then, enthusiasm has changed considerably.
So the question is:
Does Web3 still have a future, or was much of the original excitement simply hype?
What Was Web3 Supposed to Change?
The broad Web3 vision has included ideas such as:
Decentralised applications
Digital ownership
Blockchain-based identity
Decentralised finance
Tokenised assets
User-controlled data
Decentralised social platforms
Blockchain gaming
Decentralised infrastructure
The idea is that blockchain technology could reduce reliance on centralised platforms for certain online activities.
What Has Actually Worked?
Some blockchain applications have gained meaningful usage.
Stablecoins, decentralised exchanges, DeFi protocols and tokenisation are examples of areas where blockchain technology continues to develop.
But many other Web3 projects struggled to achieve mainstream adoption.
The User Experience Problem
One challenge is complexity.
Using traditional websites and financial applications is often much easier than managing wallets, seed phrases, network fees and blockchain transactions.
For Web3 to reach a much broader audience, applications may need to become significantly easier to use.
Does Everything Need a Blockchain?
Another important question is whether blockchain technology actually improves a particular product.
Adding a token or decentralised component doesn't automatically make an application better.
Projects may have stronger long-term prospects when blockchain solves a genuine problem rather than being added simply because it's fashionable.
What Does the Next Version of Web3 Look Like?
Perhaps Web3 won't develop exactly as originally predicted.
Instead of replacing the traditional internet, blockchain technology could become infrastructure behind particular financial services, payments, digital assets and applications.
